Minute Daily Devotional — Partnering with the Right People
Proverbs 13:20-21 in the New International Version states the following: “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Despite popular opinion, your destiny is impacted by the people whom you associate with. You will pick up the habits of your five closest friends. If those five friends are all successful, you will inevitably become successful. If those five friends are all unsuccessful, you will be unsuccessful.
As a person who grew up in poverty in the ghetto, the people around me had the poverty mentality. Most of them weren’t interested in making their situation better. They had a woe is me mentality and expected someone else to help them out. Even as I became more educated, I didn’t change the people around me for a long time. This stifled my personal and professional growth. It wasn’t until I left the ghetto and found new friends that my life started to change for the better. Being around knowledgeable and wise friends helped kickstart my career and my dreams. No longer could I hide behind excuses for not achieving my goals, especially since I had a team helping me achieve them.
The people you’re around are going to either help build you up or bring you down. Choose to be around people who have similar goals as yourself. Choose to be around people who will help you achieve your goals. Your life will be the average of your five closest friends.
